Privacy
Privacy policy
We Protect AB, Tågagatan 1, 252 22 Helsingborg (org. no. 559356-7844), Sweden, is responsible for the personal data handled by the wepnav App and by this website. Questions and requests: info@navprotect.io.
Accounts and signing in
You can sign in with an account your organisation has given you. Your e-mail address and password are sent once to the Copyl platform (api.copyl.com), which runs the wepnav service for us, to check them and, if your account requires it, to send you a verification code. The password is never stored.
You can also create your own account with Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google. Apple or Google confirms who you are and gives us your e-mail address (with Apple it can be a private relay address) and the name you choose to share. We use them to create your account on the Copyl platform. Apple and Google handle the sign-in under their own privacy policies.
Either way, the app keeps only a session token, in the device Keychain, until you sign out.
Your position
Without a sensor, the app shows your phone's position on the map. It asks for your location only while the app is in use, never in the background.
To show boats and AIS ships near you, the app sends the current position (your phone's, or the sensor's when you follow a sensor) to the wepnav service every 30 seconds. It is used to answer that request and is not stored.
If you turn on weather warnings (off by default), the position, its accuracy and, while you are moving, the stretch you will cover in the next hour are sent to the Copyl weather-warning service to fetch warnings for that area. If you choose to monitor a place, that place is saved so you can be notified.
Showing your boat to others
You can save a profile of your boat: name, type, length, cruising speed, home port and, if you want, a photo. Location data in the photo is removed on the phone and again on our server. The profile is stored until you change or delete it.
"Show my boat to others" is off by default. While it is on, the app sends your phone's position, course and speed every 30 seconds, and other wepnav users within about 10 nautical miles see your boat's name, type, length, photo and that position. They never see your name or e-mail address. Your boat appears under an id that changes each time you turn sharing on.
We keep only the latest position, never a track. It is deleted as soon as you turn sharing off, and at the latest 30 minutes after the last update.
Sensors and vessels
The app shows data from your organisation's wepnav Sensor: position, course, speed, satellite signal, alarms and events. That data belongs to your organisation. The app reads it from the wepnav service, or directly from a paired sensor over Bluetooth, and adds nothing to it. Bluetooth is used only to talk to the sensor, never to find your location.
If your organisation turns on "Show vessel to nearby boats" for a sensor, wepnav users within about 10 nautical miles see the vessel's name and its latest position, course and speed, never its track or interference data.
Maps
Maps are loaded from OpenStreetMap's tile servers and from EMODnet Bathymetry (European Commission), also when you download the sea chart for offline use. Like any web request, they receive your IP address and the map area requested. Their own privacy policies apply to those requests. Map tiles are stored on the device.
No tracking
Neither the app nor this website uses analytics, advertising, tracking or cookies. The demo in the app ("Explore with demo data") uses simulated data and sends nothing apart from the map requests.
Legal basis
We process your account, boat profile and positions to provide the service you or your organisation have chosen (contract). Showing your boat to others is your choice, and you can turn it off at any time (consent).
Who receives data
The Copyl platform runs the wepnav service for us. Apple and Google receive what their sign-in needs when you use it. OpenStreetMap and EMODnet receive map requests. Other wepnav users nearby see only what is described under "Showing your boat to others". We do not sell personal data.
How long we keep it
Your account is kept until you or your organisation deletes it. Your boat profile and photo are kept until you delete them or your account. Your shared position is kept for at most 30 minutes after the last update. Positions sent to find nearby boats and AIS ships are not stored.
Deleting your account
In the app, go to Settings › Account › Delete account. That deletes your boat profile, photo and shared position at once, and also the account itself if you created it with Apple or Google in the app. An account your organisation gave you is managed by the organisation: the app then deletes wepnav's data, and your organisation's administrator removes the account. You can also write to us.
Age limit
wepnav is for people aged 16 and over. If you are younger, do not create an account.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct and delete your personal data, to restrict or object to its processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. Write to info@navprotect.io. You may also complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY), imy.se.
Changes
When we change this policy we publish the new version here, with a new version number and date.
